The First Purple Light

Jefferson Berry & Charlie O'Hay

The Time it took

To complete the act

Was nothing, little more

Than the Cry of a dove

Alone she sat

As the first purple light

Of Dawn sifted through

The blinds, And her Love

The first birds had begun their song

Soon in the street below, the cars would sing along

She looked down

at her hands as though

They were two estranged children

Who had only just come home

He looked like marzipan

So still and sweet

A brutish man at his best

Now so innocent, so complete

The plastic bag

That held his last breath

Well she squeezed and dropped it

In the trash by the bed

The first birds had begun their song

Soon the working day would hum along

She thought back,

it was only yesterday

There didn't seem a way out

No, there didn't seem a way.

The Time it took

To complete the act

Was nothing, little more

Than the Cry of a dove
